Resurgent Streams

“Resurgent Streams” is a generative artwork dedicated to contemporary Mexican Indigenous poetry. Beginning with twelve poems from the "Encuentro Nacional de Escritoras en Lenguas Indígenas" (National Convention of Writers in Indigenous Languages), the piece offers a turbulent display of words in Tsotsil, Mayo, Purépecha, Náhuatl, Mixe, Ch'ol, Mixteco, Zoque, Maya and Zapotec. Additional languages and poems are incorporated as they are licensed and brokered, with consent, compensation, and on-screen credit provided to each poet.

The words appear as a flow of letters moving along never-repeating paths, controlled by fluid-dynamic equations. As visitors walk in front of the work, the system detects their presence and the display automatically zooms in on specific poems that can be read in the original language and in translation to Spanish.

The installation takes the form of a vertical projection inside the museum’s Gamboa Hall, with the streams flowing upward, asserting Indigenous languages as both deeply rooted in history and actively projected into the future—living systems that carry Mexico’s plural origin stories and demand continued presence.
