Homage to Felguérez

“Homage to Felguérez” is a light-based intervention on the monumental sculpture El Barco, México 68 by Zacatecan artist Manuel Felguérez. Widely regarded as a pioneer of computer-assisted art in Mexico, Felguérez explored systems, instructions, and modular forms that exerted a decisive influence on Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s practice.

During a visit to his studio in 2014, Felguérez shared with Lozano-Hemmer a triad that condensed the dynamic tension of his work: TENSION – BALANCE – RUPTURE. This installation translates that conceptual framework directly onto the sculpture by casting the three words simultaneously, each emitted from a projector positioned in a different location. The sculpture’s complex topography distorts the projections; however, each word becomes fully legible only when the viewer occupies a specific vantage point aligned with its corresponding projector.

The linear pedestrian route around the sculpture thus transforms reading into a kinetic experience. Moving from left to right, visitors encounter TENSION, then BALANCE, and finally RUPTURE; walking in the opposite direction reverses this sequence. Outside of these points of alignment, the projections fragment and overlap, remaining visible but unreadable. In this way, the work emphasizes perception as contingent and embodied, turning the sculpture into a shifting field of perspectives where meaning emerges through movement.
