"Undercurrents" is an audiovisual installation that transforms the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern in Houston into an underground echo chamber of voice and light. It consists of a mile-long network of bright white LED light cables, suspended just above the water's surface, using steel catenaries stretched across the cistern's columns. The resulting matrix of zigzagging lines of light creates a seemingly endless "switchboard" of connection across the entire width and length of the cistern—an effect doubled by the reflectivity of the pool of water. Here, participant voices are transformed into pulses of light that travel along branching paths, creating an ever-shifting network of connections across time, space, and meaning.
