Border Tuner Triptych
“Border Tuner Triptych” is an algorithmic array of 27,000 images extracted from social networks classified according to geo-location and 150 bilingual descriptive tags such as sunset, emergency, citizen, passport, celebration and surveillance. Each panel of the triptych represents 3 locations that create the largest binational metropolis in the western hemisphere: the left panel has images of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua; the central panel has images of the border wall separating the US and Mexico; and the right panel has images geo-located in El Paso, Texas. This triptych is a visual aggregate texture made during Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s “Border Tuner” interactive installation in the region, in which tens of thousands of people spoke across the border using bridges of light.
The triptych is accompanied by a 54 minute video documentary of the Border Tuner installation, which connected El Paso and Ciudad Juárez using bridges of light controlled by the voices of participants on both sides of the US-Mexico border.
